Hybrid Cars in Brunei: Prices and Why More Are Arriving

Hybrid Cars in Brunei: Prices and Why More Are Arriving
More than 15 brands sell hybrid cars in Brunei, including Toyota, Honda, Lexus, BYD, GWM, MG and Chery. In November 2026 AutoPasar lists more than 35 hybrid and plug-in hybrid models as available. Prices run from under B$30,000 for a compact sedan or SUV to over B$200,000 for a Lexus MPV. There are two kinds. A self-charging hybrid never needs a plug. A plug-in hybrid can be charged at home and can drive short distances on battery alone. More are announced, including the MG3 Hybrid+ and the Mitsubishi XForce HEV.

Plug-in hybrids and range extenders are marked. Every other car in the table is a self-charging hybrid. This is a selection of what is on sale, and prices can change after verification.

Self-charging, plug-in or range extender

A self-charging hybrid has a petrol engine, an electric motor and a small battery that charges itself as you drive and brake. The Toyota Vios HEV, the Honda ZR-V e:HEV and the Ora 05 HEV all work this way. You fill up at a normal pump and never plug in. Lexus sells self-charging hybrid versions of most of its range here, from the LBX to the LM. Our Lexus guide explains which Lexus models plug in.
A plug-in hybrid, such as the BYD Seal 5 DM-i or the MG HS PHEV, has a much bigger battery that you charge from a socket. By BYD's figure, the Seal 5 DM-i can drive up to 120 km on battery alone, and when the battery runs low it carries on as a normal hybrid. Home electricity in Brunei costs no more than about 12 cents a unit, so a full charge of the Seal 5's battery costs about B$2.20 at most.
In a range extender, such as the Deepal S05 REEV, only the electric motor drives the wheels. The petrol engine just makes electricity. Nissan's X-Trail e-POWER works the same way, but it has no plug.

Why more hybrids are arriving in Brunei

Regular petrol in Brunei costs about 53 cents a litre, the cheapest in ASEAN, so the push is not coming from the pump. Three things are behind it.
Electric cars are growing from a small base. Electric vehicles made up 2.8% of new registrations in the first half of 2026, up from 0.7% in 2025, according to figures reported by Xinhua in August 2026. Xinhua also reported that about 2,000 electric and plug-in hybrid cars were on the road by January 2026. Brunei's National Climate Change Policy targets electric vehicles making up 60% of annual car sales by 2035. Hybrid sales are not reported separately in these figures.
Charging is still limited. Brunei had about 40 public charging points across 22 locations in July 2026. A self-charging hybrid uses less fuel without relying on that network. A plug-in hybrid can charge at home and still run on petrol anywhere.
Prices have come down. The cheapest hybrids now sit alongside mainstream petrol cars. The BYD Seal 5 DM-i and Atto 2 DM-i are B$27,900, and the Ora 05 HEV is B$29,900. Brands also back their batteries with long warranties. Toyota covers its hybrid batteries for 10 years or 300,000 km, and BYD covers the Seal 5's battery for 8 years or 160,000 km. GWM gives 10 years or 1,000,000 km on the engine and transmission, as set out in our GWM hybrid guide.

Hybrids announced for Brunei

Several more hybrids are announced but not yet on sale. The MG3 Hybrid+ is listed at B$25,800, and Mitsubishi has opened pre-booking for the XForce HEV. BYD has the Ti7 plug-in hybrid SUV on the way. Range-extender models are coming from Forthing and XPeng.

The catch: cheap petrol makes the savings small

With petrol at about 53 cents a litre, filling a 40-litre tank costs around B$21. Even a hybrid that halved your fuel use would save about B$10 a tank, so the extra you pay for a hybrid can take a long time to earn back at the pump. Brunei's Minister of Transport and Infocommunications made a similar point in March 2025, when he said cheap fuel gives drivers little financial reason to switch to electric cars. The stronger reasons to choose a hybrid here are quieter, smoother driving in town traffic, more distance between fill-ups and the long battery warranties. Before deciding, compare the hybrid's price with the petrol version of the same model.

Frequently asked questions

PMV Brunei 2026: the official dealer price list

The latest edition is the "PASSENGER MOTOR VEHICLES (PMV) PRICES ISSUED BY CAR DEALERS AS OF 20TH AUGUST 2026", a list issued every quarter. Each figure is a ceiling, not the price you will pay. It is set high enough to cover that model and trim with nearly every available option, and banks use it as the upper limit for car loans, so showroom prices usually sit below it. The list can also lag the showroom as new models arrive and others are discontinued. Our full guide to reading the PMV Brunei 2026 list explains what to check before relying on any figure in it.
