Car Financing in Brunei: The Complete Guide

How car financing works here, what it costs, what you need to qualify, and how Islamic and conventional financing differ. Everything in one place, in plain language. How car financing works in Brunei: costs, eligibility, and Islamic vs conventional, in plain language.

Based on the published terms of BIBD At-Tamwil, Baiduri Finance and TAIB.

How it works

Two systems sit behind every monthly payment

If you are buying a new car on monthly payments, there are two different systems: different contracts, not just different rates.

Islamic, BIBD At-Tamwil, TAIB

Lease, then purchase

Based on AITAB: Al-Ijarah Thumma Al-Bai', a lease followed by purchase. The lender buys the car and leases it to you for an agreed monthly rental over the tenure. At the end, you buy the car from the lender under a separate sale contract (at BIBD At-Tamwil, for a nominal B$1). The lender earns a disclosed profit rate instead of charging interest.

Conventional, Baiduri Finance

Hire purchase

Conventional hire purchase (Baiduri Finance) is a fixed-interest facility under Brunei's Hire-Purchase Act (Chapter 292). Baiduri owns the vehicle during the agreement, you pay fixed monthly instalments, and ownership transfers to you when the final payment is made.

In practice both feel the same month to month: a fixed payment for a fixed number of years, usually up to seven years, and up to ten under some schemes. The differences show up in the paperwork, the protection products, and what happens if you settle early or run into trouble. Both are a fixed monthly payment for a fixed term, usually up to seven years. They differ in paperwork, protection products and early settlement.

How banks assess you

  • Your income against your total debt

TAIB allows your total monthly debt repayments to reach at most 60% of your net income if you earn B$1,750 or more per month; below that, the limit is set by TAIB's policy.

  • Where your salary is paid

TAIB requires your salary or pension to be assigned to it.

  • Your employer

TAIB lends to government, government-linked and recognised private-sector employees.

  • Your existing commitments

Banks check other financing, cards, and deductions already against your salary.

BIBD At-Tamwil and Baiduri do not publish a debt ratio.

What you can control: keep your commitments low before applying, have your documents in order, and choose a payment your salary supports. A larger down payment also helps.

Down Payment

Our monthly figures assume B$0 down, so the full price is financed and the monthly payment is at its highest. Any down payment reduces the amount financed, the monthly payment, and the total profit or interest you pay.

Financing Tenure

Standard financing at BIBD At-Tamwil, Baiduri and TAIB runs up to seven years (84 months). Longer terms do exist: BIBD At-Tamwil’s AITAB Flexi lowers the monthly rental over 84 months with a balance due at the end, often advertised by dealers as “7+3”, and some government and large-employer schemes offer up to 10 years. Whether you qualify depends on your employer and the lender’s assessment. A longer tenure lowers the monthly payment but increases the total you pay.

Dealer special rates

If a special rate exists, we show it.

If things go wrong

Missing payments has a formal process: knowing it protects you.

From the due date

Late instalments accrue charges from the day they fall due until the outstanding payment is settled.

If you breach the agreement

The lender can serve a Notice of Intention to Repossess, which gives you 14 days to pay what is overdue.

After repossession

You receive a notice of the total outstanding and have 14 days to redeem the vehicle. After that the lender can sell the car, and you remain liable for any shortfall.

Missed payments are also reported to the Credit Bureau run by Brunei Darussalam Central Bank, which can affect future applications at any lender. If you are struggling with payments, contact your lender before the arrears build. Lenders can restructure financing at their discretion, usually for a fee: the earlier the conversation, the more options exist.

Financing FAQs

How does car financing work in Brunei?

If you are buying a new car on monthly payments in Brunei, there are two contracts: Islamic financing, structured as a lease followed by purchase (AITAB), or conventional hire purchase governed by Brunei's Hire-Purchase Act (Chapter 292). Under both the lender owns the vehicle during the agreement and you pay a fixed monthly amount over the tenure. Under Islamic financing you then buy the car under a separate sale contract (at BIBD At-Tamwil, for a nominal B$1); under hire purchase, ownership transfers on the final payment. Standard financing runs up to seven years, and up to ten under some schemes. In practice both feel the same month to month; the differences show up in the paperwork, the protection products, and what happens if you settle early.

What documents do I need for car financing in Brunei?

Expect to provide your identity card, a Brunei driving licence, recent salary slips and recent bank statements (TAIB asks for 3 months of each; Baiduri 3 to 6 months), and confirmation of your salary, pension or contract of service where applicable. Baiduri also asks permanent residents and foreigners for a passport, and foreigners for a valid employment pass. Baiduri Finance lends to Brunei residents and foreigners with a valid employment pass, aged 18 to 60. TAIB lends to Brunei citizens and permanent residents aged 18 and above who work in the government sector, a government-linked company or a recognised private company, and requires your salary or pension to be assigned to TAIB. Self-employed applicants may need a business registration certificate. Baiduri also accepts applications online through HP Online.

What is the difference between profit rate and interest rate?

A profit rate belongs to Islamic financing: the bank buys the car, leases it to you, and earns a disclosed profit instead of charging interest, with ownership transferring by a separate sale contract at the end. An interest rate belongs to conventional hire purchase, a fixed-interest facility where ownership transfers on the final payment. The practical differences are in the paperwork and the protection products; early settlement fees at Baiduri and TAIB follow the same tiers, with TAIB granting a rebate (ibra') at its discretion. Neither is automatically cheaper; the payment depends on rate, tenure, and down payment.

Can I finance a car with no down payment in Brunei?

Our monthly figures assume B$0 down so every car is compared on the same basis. How much of the price a lender will finance depends on its assessment of you; a down payment lowers both the monthly payment and the total you pay.

Is insurance required for a financed car?

Yes. Comprehensive cover is mandatory until the financing is fully paid. This is in each lender's terms and in the Hire-Purchase Act. It is charged every year of the tenure rather than once. Conventional hire purchase requires comprehensive insurance for the full tenure; Islamic financing uses takaful, and BIBD At-Tamwil also requires a one-time Consumer Financing Protection contribution that settles your financing in the event of death, payable up front or included in the financing. None of these change your monthly instalment, but all of them belong in your budget.
